Transportation in China

Huang, Kennan

China around 2015 has been improving on an environmental resilient transportation system. A resilient transportation system offers citizens different methods of transportation. Such as having the option to take a train, ride a bike, or take the bus. (Huang, Kennan)

The  "resilient¨  part of this transportation method refers to how it can be fueled by multiple energy sources. Such as wind, solar, and oil. It uses fossil fuels sparingly. (Huang, Kennan)

Some examples of China's transportation advancements include the following:

Electric Cars:
China has a five year plan that will increase the use of electric cars and hopefully have 5 million of these electric/ hybrid cars on the road by 2020. By 2015 China bought 188,00 electric cars (which is about 1% of the countries car sales that year) but has since grown to 223% the following year.
Although sales in the EV market has risen in China, the U.S. has declined (2014 to 2015)- from 122,00 to 116,00. The reason being maybe due to low gas prices making gas fueled vehicles more affordable.

Electric Buses:
BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) help 4.3 million people in China to get where they need to be everyday. While Americas BRT only moves less than 500,000 ( But it must be taken into account that America is less than a quarter the size of China).

"In Changzhou, 25% of commuters use the BRT", Huang and Kennan say.

These electric buses help cut down on fossil fuels and overall helping the environment. China has more than 100,00 electric buses and hopes by 2025 to have all their buses to be electric.

Public Bike Programs:

Huang and Kennan

China implicated a bike sharing program to get commuters in an inexpensive, healthy, and environmental way to work. By 2020 the Chinese government wants 18% of commuters to use bikes. Beijing is using this bike sharing program to help cut down on pollution.

China's air pollution problem in May has been decreasing. Environment Minister Li Ganjie announced that the average levels of PM2.5 pollution has decreased 9% in 2018 compared to 2017 (Tiezzi).
The uses of electric modes of transportation is cutting down on air pollution and global warming issues.

While Americans believe that electrical cars are impractical, they are actually very beneficial.
Since electric cars don´t have tailpipe emissions, it helps produce a healthier air. It also produces fewer green house gas emissions to help our ozone layer (fleetcarma.com).

Not to mention you can get payed for driving one. Depending on what state you live in, you could be eligible for tax credit or significant rebate. Each purchase of a EV car comes with a one-time $7,500 + federal tax credit and 30% tax credit for the purchase/installation of a home charger. (Fleetcarma.com)

  1. So is your conclusion that the US should implement some of these steps like China is? Do you think Americans are as likely to do this as Chinese citizens, especially because we don't face the same kind of pollution issues that China does?

  2. This was very informational but what are your opinions on this? Should the US and other countries follow what China is doing?

    1. I personally feel that America should try to implement some of these methods that China is using, such as electrical buses and cars. Even though the air pollution is worse in China by a lot it's better to have no air pollution then a little.

  4. Tomorrow I have to walk about 1 mile to my house. This will save some of the gasoline. I can survive walking in cold water sometimes, but it depends on the temperature. I know that walking helps the environment.
